Fadhili wears its history in its spelling. Swahili is written with a straightforward Roman alphabet in which most letters do exactly one job, and the digraphs dh, th and gh turn up almost only in words that came from Arabic — the language kept the borrowed sounds instead of flattening them into d, t and g. So the dh in Fadhili is a small archaeological marker. Behind it is Arabic fadl, a word that covers favour, bounty and excellence, applied to God's generosity and to ordinary human decency without changing register. The same root produces afdal, better or best, and the Arabic names Fadil and Fadl.

The Kenyan singer and guitarist recorded "Malaika" in the early 1960s, and the song became one of the most covered pieces of music in Swahili, taken up by Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Boney M and dozens of others; the question of who actually wrote it followed him for the rest of his life. Beyond him the name lives mainly as a Tanzanian and Kenyan surname and as ordinary vocabulary, which is much of its charm — it has not been claimed by anyone.
