Arabic rāshid describes a person who is on the right road: not righteous by accident but sound in judgement, of age and of sense. The root r-sh-d gives rushd, "right guidance and maturity", and the same root names the Rashidun, the four "rightly guided" caliphs of the first Islamic generation. Swahili takes the word almost intact. Because Swahili syllables end in vowels, an Arabic name that finishes on a consonant collects one on the way in, and Rashid arrives on the coast as Rashidi.
That transfer is not a curiosity but the main story of Swahili naming. A thousand years of monsoon trade across the Indian Ocean bound the coast from Lamu to Kilwa into the Arabic-speaking world, and a large share of Swahili vocabulary — and most of its older personal names — came in on those ships. Rashidi carries real religious weight alongside its everyday use: the intensive form Ar-Rashīd is one of the ninety-nine names of God, which is why the compound Abd ar-Rashid, "servant of the Rightly Guiding", exists beside the bare name. Bearing the bare form is normal and unremarkable. The Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, who ruled from 786 to 809, took it as a regnal epithet rather than a birth name.

Rashidi Yekini (1963–2012), the Nigerian striker, was African Footballer of the Year in 1993 and scored Nigeria's first goal at a World Cup finals in 1994 — the same Arabic name reaching West Africa by a different road.
