History & meaning
Yoruba builds names by stacking a subject onto a small predicate, and -fẹ́mi is one of the busiest predicates in the language: loves me. Put God in front and you have Olúwáfẹ́mi or Olúfẹ́mi. Put the king there and you have Obafemi. Put the crown there and you have Adéfẹ́mi. Fẹ́mi on its own is what is left when the subject drops off, and because the subject is overwhelmingly Olúwa, "God loves me" is the honest gloss to give it — with the caveat that the name itself does not say who is doing the loving.
Short forms of this kind are not nicknames in Yoruba practice. They are registered, printed on degrees and used in court, exactly as Ayo and the Igbo Emeka are. Femi has been a complete name for generations, and outside Nigeria it is frequently the only form a family uses, because two syllables cross a border without being asked to repeat themselves. Note the tone marks in the Yoruba spelling: ẹ with the dot under it is a different vowel from plain e, and the acute mark on it is a high tone, not a stress.

It is the shortest way to say something enormous. Parents who want a devotional name without a five-syllable one get it here, and Femi has the additional advantage of scanning as friendly rather than solemn — a name a toddler can say about himself.
