Obafemi has a subject, a verb and an object, which is normal for Yoruba names and startling to anyone expecting a one-word gloss. Ọ̀ba is the king. Fẹ́ is to love or to want. Mi is me. The interesting part is that the subject is deliberately unresolved. An ọba is a real office, still occupied — the Ọ̀ọ̀ni of Ife and the Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́ are among the best known — so in a family with a court connection the name is dynastic. But Christian and Muslim Yoruba also address God as Ọ̀ba Ọ̀run, king of heaven, and in those households the same four syllables are devotional. Families very rarely feel the need to pick a side.
Names of this kind are conferred at a ceremony, not filled in on a form. The Yoruba naming rite, ísọmọlórúkọ, traditionally falls on the seventh day for a girl, the ninth for a boy and the eighth for twins, though the eighth day now serves most families. Several names are given at once, since the parents, the grandparents and other senior relatives may each confer one, and a child may also carry an oríkì, a praise-name that is chanted rather than used for address.
