History & meaning
The name is Germanic, but its home is Iberian. The Visigoths ruled Hispania for three centuries and left their personal names behind when their kingdom fell in 711; Fernando is one of the survivors, built from frithu, peace or protection, and nanth, daring. The combination is unusual enough that it is usually rendered as a paradox — bold peace, or a protector who is not passive about it. Take the elements as the standard analysis rather than a settled fact: the first is sometimes read as fardi, journey, which would make the name a bold traveller instead.
From the eleventh century it became a royal name. Fernando I of León and Castile was crowned in 1037; Fernando III took Córdoba and Seville and was made a saint; Fernando II of Aragon married Isabella of Castile and presided over 1492. Two sound changes then produced doublets. Castilian turned many initial f sounds into h, giving Hernando and Hernán — Hernán Cortés carries the same name as any Fernando. Portuguese contracted it to Fernão, which is why Fernão de Magalhães reaches English as Ferdinand Magellan. Spanish and Portuguese emigration then took all these forms worldwide.
Why parents choose it
Fernando is formal without being stiff, and it comes with Nando already attached for the years when formality is not the point. English speakers pronounce it correctly on the first try, which is not true of every three-syllable Spanish name, and it lets a family honour an abuelo without giving a child a name anyone will have to spell twice.
