Old and modern Irish carried a precise set of colour bynames for people: fionn for fair, donn for brown, dubh for black, ruadh for red-haired, and flann for blood-red. Flann was a real personal name in its own right — Flann Sinna, king of Mide and high king of Ireland, died in 916 — and Ó Floinn, "descendant of Flann", is the surname built on it. Everything Flynn means points to red. Finn, the name it gets confused with, means the opposite.
