History & meaning
Two Germanic words, joined the way Germanic names always joined them: frid, peace or protection, and ric, ruler. The compound has been read as peaceful ruler since the Middle Ages, though the older sense of frid is closer to security than to pacifism — a ruler who keeps the peace rather than one who avoids a fight. The second element is the workhorse of northern European naming. It closes Erik, Henrik and Ulrik, and it is a cousin of Latin rex.
The name reached Scandinavia from Germany, and once there it climbed straight onto the thrones. Denmark took it up under the House of Oldenburg and then did something unusual with it: from 1513 onward the crown passed almost without exception between a Christian and a Frederik, generation after generation, so that a Danish child could guess the next king's name before he was born. Sweden's Fredrik I was a German prince, Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, who married Ulrika Eleonora and took the crown in 1720. Norway spent those centuries in union first with Denmark and then with Sweden, which is why Fredrik has been at home in all three.
