History & meaning
The first half of Henrik is a house. Germanic haim is the word behind English home and German Heim, and the name it built means something closer to master of the estate than monarch of the realm. That modest sense did not stop it: eight English kings, seven Holy Roman emperors and four French kings took the name, and the second element — the same ruler-word that ends Erik and Fredrik — did most of the heavy lifting. What is striking is that the north never grandified it. Germany has Heinrich, France Henri; Scandinavia has Henrik, spelled the same in all three countries.
Except in Finland, where the name is a founding legend. Henrik was, by tradition, an Englishman who came to Sweden as a papal legate, became bishop of Uppsala, and joined King Erik on a crusade into Finland in the 1150s. The story has him murdered on the frozen surface of Lake Köyliö by a peasant named Lalli, remembered as a folk hero in some tellings and a villain in others. Very little of it can be documented, but Henrik became Finland's patron saint, and Heikki, the Finnish form, is one of the commonest men's names in the country.
Why parents choose it
Henry has come roaring back across the English-speaking world; Henrik gives you the identical name with a Nordic stamp, no crowd, and a harder, cleaner finish. It also survives the Atlantic better than most names here — the sounds are all English ones. Expect the spelling to be a lifelong nuisance, since Hendrick, Henrick and Hendrik are all real names and all wrong for this one.
