Italy does something with double names that English never took up: it welds them. Giovanni clips to Gian and Pietro clips to Pier, and those two stumps then fasten onto a second name to make one word and one legal identity — Gianluca, Giancarlo, Gianfranco, Gianluigi, Pierluigi, Pierpaolo. The join is close enough that Italian spelling follows the tongue: before p or b the n turns to m, so Gian plus Paolo is written Giampaolo, Gian plus Battista is Giambattista.
