History & meaning
This name began as a joke that stuck. Simon bar Jonah was a fisherman, and Jesus gave him the Aramaic byname Kephas, the rock; the Gospel writers translated it into Greek as Petros and Matthew 16:18 turns on the pun — you are Petros, and on this petra I will build my church. Nobody had been called Peter before him. The word was ordinary Greek for a stone and had never served as a personal name, which makes this one of the very few names in wide use whose entire history starts with one man. Latin took it as Petrus, and Petrus wore down through Italian sound change to Pietro, the short e breaking into the ie glide that also turns Latin pedem into piede.
In Italian the name is inseparable from Rome. The church over the apostle's tomb is San Pietro — the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano — and the colonnaded square in front of it is Piazza San Pietro; no Italian says St Peter's, and every road sign, bus stop and map in the city says Pietro. Inside, running in gold around the base of Michelangelo's dome, is the Latin of the verse that gave the name away: TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM. Pietro is what that Latin became in the language spoken outside the door. Italian also kept an older Tuscan form alongside it, Piero, which belonged to Piero della Francesca and to two generations of ruling Medici, and Pier, which lives on as the first element of double names.
