History & meaning
The most military saint in the calendar has a farmer’s name. Geōrgios is built from gē, earth, and ergon, work: a tiller of soil, about as far from cavalry as a Greek noun gets. The man behind it was a soldier from Cappadocia executed under Diocletian, and for the first nine hundred years of his cult he had no dragon at all. The rescue of the princess arrives late, spread by crusader contact with the East and fixed for the West by the Golden Legend in the thirteenth century. The story sold; the etymology stayed put.
Italy took him seriously in the maritime republics. Genoa made San Giorgio its patron and flew his red cross at sea, and in 1407 the city chartered the Casa di San Giorgio, a bank that ran colonies and public debt for four centuries and is one of the ancestors of modern finance. Venice answered with San Giorgio Maggiore, the white church Palladio set on its own island facing the Doge’s Palace. The English crown later adopted the same cross, though the often-repeated tale that it leased the flag from Genoa is a story rather than a documented transaction.
