Glenn began as a description of where somebody lived. Gaelic gleann means a narrow valley, steep-sided and usually carrying a burn, and it is so useful a word that Scots and then English borrowed it outright in the fifteenth century: a glen is still a glen in any dictionary. Families who farmed one were named for it, and the surname Glenn crossed the Atlantic with Scottish and Ulster-Scots emigrants, where it settled thickly enough in Pennsylvania and the Carolinas to become ordinary.
Its life as a first name is almost entirely a twentieth-century American story.
