Dennis

History & meaning

Dennis is a god's name that went to church. Behind it stands Greek Dionysios, the adjective built on Dionysos, god of wine, theatre and ecstatic release; it was an ordinary personal name in the Greek world centuries before Christianity. Early Christians kept using it without apparent embarrassment — Dionysius the Areopagite, the Athenian converted by Paul in Acts 17, is the reason it survived the transition. Very few names carry a pagan deity this openly and end up on a saint's calendar anyway.

The road into English runs through France. Dionysius contracted to Denis, and St Denis, the third-century bishop of Paris who was beheaded at Montmartre and is patron saint of France, made it one of the commonest names in the medieval French-speaking world. Normans brought Denis to England after 1066; English hands doubled the n and kept the s. Then came the American chapter. Dennis was ordinary in the 1930s, everywhere in the 1940s and 1950s, and has been receding ever since — the shape of a name that belonged very specifically to one generation. That is also the position from which vintage names tend to return, usually about a century after their peak.

Why parents choose it

Almost always for a person. Dennis is not currently fashionable, and the parents who use it are generally naming for a grandfather or a father, which is the best reason a name can have. What they get in return is a name nobody misspells, nobody mispronounces, and nobody has to be taught — plus Denny, one of the warmest short forms in English.

Dennis Ritchie created the C programming language and, with Ken Thompson, Unix; almost every device you own runs on his work. Dennis Hopper directed and starred in Easy Rider and was still frightening audiences twenty years later in Blue Velvet. Dennis Rodman won five NBA championships as the least conventional rebounder in the sport's history, and Dennis Quaid has been a working American leading man since The Right Stuff. One curiosity: two separate comic-strip characters called Dennis the Menace, one American and one British, debuted within days of each other in March 1951, neither aware of the other.
