History & meaning
William came to Britain with the Normans and to Welsh with the same conquest, but Welsh reshaped it on the way in. A borrowed initial w regularly became gw in Welsh — the same change gave Gwallter for Walter — and the ending settled into -ym. The meaning did not budge. It is still wil and helm, will and protection, the two Germanic elements behind every William, Liam and Guillermo on earth.
What lifts the Welsh form above a translation is one poet. Dafydd ap Gwilym — the patronymic means son of Gwilym — worked in the middle of the fourteenth century, probably from Brogynin in Ceredigion, and is held by common consent to be the greatest poet Wales has produced. He took the cywydd, a demanding metre with its own rules of internal rhyme and consonance, and used it for something new: seduction, weather, birds treated as messengers, and comedy at his own expense. One famous poem has him crashing about a dark tavern in pursuit of a girl, waking the household and colliding with the furniture. Six hundred years later the poems still read as though written by somebody in a hurry to be somewhere.

It is the rare Welsh name that a non-Welsh speaker can attempt and get close to on the first try. Two syllables, front-stressed, no consonant clusters that English cannot make. Families use it to keep William in the family without producing a fourth Will in one generation, and the literary association does no harm at all.
