History & meaning
Medieval England had a factory for nicknames: take the first syllable of a name, bolt on the suffix -kin, and you get Watkin from Walter, Perkin from Peter, Jenkin from John. Han was a clipped form of Henry, so Han plus -kin gave Hankin, and Hankin in turn wore down to Hank. The meaning never moves: Henry is the Germanic Heimirich, heim and ric, the home and the rule of it, usually rendered “ruler of the household”.
Britain kept Harry as the everyday face of Henry and let Hankin fossilise into surnames. America did the opposite. By the nineteenth century Hank was the standard familiar form for an American Henry, and it proved so useful that it stopped asking permission: it attached itself to men christened Harold, and now and then to no Henry at all. Hank Aaron was Henry Louis Aaron and Hank Greenberg was Henry Benjamin Greenberg, but Hank Williams was born Hiram King Williams. Somewhere in the twentieth century the name stopped being a shortening and became a thing you could put on a birth certificate.
Why parents choose it
One syllable, two hard consonants, and a vowel with nowhere to hide. Hank sounds like a person you have already met, which is a strange and valuable property in a name. It also solves a problem the current fashion has created: parents who love Henry but have met four of them can take the nickname and skip the queue.
