History & meaning
Hans is Johannes with the ends knocked off. Latin Iohannes came into German as Johannes, which shortened to Hannes and then to Hans, a rare case of a name surviving as its own middle rather than its beginning. Underneath sits the Hebrew Yochanan, “Yahweh is gracious”, the same source that produced John in English, Sean in Irish, Ivan in Russian and Jean in French. Two apostles, a Baptist and a long line of popes made it the most reproduced name in Christian Europe, and every language ground it down to something short.
In German-speaking lands the grinding went furthest, and Hans became so ordinary that it turned into a generic. Folk tales are full of anonymous Hanses: Hans im Glück, who trades his fortune away piece by piece and ends up delighted; Hänsel, the diminutive, lost in the woods with his sister. It was among the most-used boys' names in Germany, Austria and Switzerland well into the twentieth century, which is precisely why it now reads there as a grandfather's name. In America it never naturalised at all. It stayed foreign, and it stayed legible as foreign, which for some parents is the entire appeal.
