History & meaning
Herr is the single most worked element in the Norse name stock — an army, a host, and by extension the man in it. Put a god in front and you get Ingvar; put a stone in front and you get Steinar; put a helmet in front and you get Hjálmarr. The helmet is the same word English keeps in helm, and it does the same job in Wilhelm and William at the other end of the Germanic world. What Norse adds is the second half, so the name is not protection in the abstract but a specific armoured man standing in a specific line.
Old Icelandic literature gives him a face. Hjalmar the Brave, in the Hervarar saga, fights the berserker Angantyr on Samsø, takes a wound from the cursed sword Tyrfing and dies reciting a poem, which is roughly the Norse ideal of a good afternoon. The name then did something few saga names managed: it stayed in ordinary Swedish use, went thoroughly bourgeois in the nineteenth century, aged into obsolescence around 1950, and came back. Swedish parents now hand it to newborns in numbers their own grandparents would have found comic.

Hjalmar Branting led Sweden’s first Social Democratic government, served three times as prime minister, and shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1921. Hjalmar Söderberg wrote Doctor Glas, still the coldest novel in Swedish. Hjalmar Andersen, known to Norway as Hjallis, took three speed skating golds at the Oslo Olympics in 1952 and was cheered through the streets for it.
