History & meaning
Hovhannes looks nothing like John and is exactly John. The Hebrew Yoḥanan, God is gracious, went into Greek as Iōannēs and into Armenian in the classical spelling Յովհաննէս, which opens with the letter yi. Later Armenian pronounced that letter as an h, and the written form drifted after the sound, which is how a name that begins with a soft y in Hebrew ended up beginning with a hard breath in Yerevan. The rest of the shape survives intact: three syllables, the stress at the far end, exactly as Greek left it.
Diaspora Armenians say Ohannes, dropping the internal h, and Ottoman records are full of it; the surnames Ohanian and Ohanesian come from that side of the split, while Hovhannisyan comes from the other. The name belongs to the two figures who between them define modern Armenian culture abroad and at home: Hovhannes Aivazovsky, born Hovhannes Aivazian in Crimea in 1817, who painted the sea more often and more famously than anyone else in the Russian Empire, and Hovhannes Tumanyan, whose poems and folk tales every Armenian child still learns.

Famous Hovhanneses
Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869–1923) is Armenia's national poet, and his house in Yerevan is a museum. Hovhannes Aivazovsky (1817–1900) produced some six thousand marine paintings and is better known internationally under the Russian form Ivan. Hovhannes Shiraz (1915–1984) is the other twentieth-century poet whose lines are quoted from memory.
