History & meaning
Huy is a light word, but not the word for light. 輝 sets 光, the graph for light, next to 軍, and what it names is the effect rather than the source: the glitter off water, the flash off polished metal, the blaze of a lit hall. Vietnamese absorbed the character during the long centuries of Chinese administration and gave it a Vietnamese sound, and the sense stayed put. Huy hoàng is the adjective you reach for describing a palace, a sunset or a career; quang huy is radiance in the plainer sense. Neither has anything to do with the name until a family decides it does.
Three different characters are read huy in Vietnamese, which is worth knowing before anyone tells you what the name means. 徽 is an emblem, the huy in huy hiệu (a badge) and huy chương (a medal). 揮 is to wield or to wave, the huy in chỉ huy (to command) and phát huy (to bring something into play). A boy named Huy is almost always 輝, and the family knows which; a name dictionary that skips the character is guessing. In Vietnam the name rarely stands alone, either. Gia Huy and Quang Huy are the compounds you meet constantly, with the single syllable doing the work only when a friend calls across a room.

Three letters, one beat, no diacritic to be stripped by an airline booking form, and a meaning that needs no translation footnote. The one snag is the opening: English has the hw- cluster in what and whee but almost never at the start of a name, so first attempts split it into hoo-EE or slide it towards Hugh. Quang 光 is the light itself rather than its shine, and the two characters sit inside each other. Minh 明 is brightness in the sense of clarity of mind, and it is the Vietnamese name English speakers already recognise. Vinh 榮 moves the same brilliance from the physical to the reputational: glory, standing, honour.
