History & meaning
Few characters are as legible as this one. 明 is the sun placed next to the moon, the two brightest objects a person can point at, and it means brightness in every direction that word travels: light in the sky at bình minh, dawn; clarity of thought in thông minh, intelligent; clarity of conduct in minh bạch, transparent or above board. Vietnamese even builds civilisation out of it, văn minh, literally the brightness of letters. A parent choosing Minh is not choosing one of those senses over the others; the character holds them together.
It is also the character of the Ming dynasty, which Vietnamese calls nhà Minh and remembers less fondly than the name suggests, since Ming armies occupied the country from 1407 until Lê Lợi drove them out twenty years later. The Chinese given name Ming is this same 明 with a Mandarin pronunciation, and the two names are best understood as cousins rather than variants. The most famous Vietnamese bearer chose the name deliberately: Hồ Chí Minh 胡志明, usually glossed he who enlightens, was adopted in the early 1940s by a man who had already gone by Nguyễn Sinh Cung and Nguyễn Ái Quốc, among many others.
Why parents choose it
Minh survives the Atlantic intact. It has no tone mark to lose, no consonant cluster to fumble, a meaning that translates in one word, and a sound English mouths already make. That combination is rare enough that Minh has become something of a default heritage name in Vietnamese-American families, held either as the given name or as the middle one.
Middle names for Minh
The ringing -ing wants a middle that opens on a consonant and runs longer: Minh Christopher, Minh Julian, Minh Patrick, Minh Theodore. Plenty of families invert the order and put Minh second, which the middle names guide treats as a strategy in its own right.
Famous Minhs
Hồ Chí Minh is the inescapable one, and Ho Chi Minh City carries the name to anyone who has looked at a map of Asia. Emperor Minh Mạng, who reigned from 1820 to 1841, was the second ruler of the Nguyễn dynasty and the one who gave the Vietnamese state much of its nineteenth-century shape. Dương Văn Minh, known as Big Minh, was president of South Vietnam for two days and surrendered Saigon on 30 April 1975. Minh Lê, the Vietnamese-American author of the picture book Drawn Together, is a gentler modern example.
Consider instead
Quang 光 is light as a physical thing, where Minh is light as clarity. Trí 智 goes straight for the intellect that Minh only implies. Ming is the same character on the Chinese side of the family, if the heritage you are naming for is that one.
