History & meaning
현 is one of the better-stocked syllables in Korean naming. A family writing Hyunwoo can reach for 賢, wise and worthy, the character in the word for a sage; 炫, to shine or dazzle; 鉉, the jade hook that lifted a ritual cauldron, used by long extension of a high minister of state; 顯, manifest and illustrious; or 玄, dark in the sense of profound and unfathomable. Behind it 우 supplies 宇, the roof of the sky and so all of space, or 祐 and 佑, help from heaven. Pair them and Hyunwoo comes out as wisdom under an open sky, or brilliance with protection, or half a dozen other honest readings. No page can pick for you, and no two families need agree: the meaning belongs to the characters in the register, not to the sound they share.
What the sound does supply is a date. Hyunwoo is a 1990s name in the way that Gary is a 1950s name in English, and the shape of the cohort is easy to see once you know it: 승, 현, 진 and 우 were the workhorse syllables of that generation, giving Seunghyun, Hyunjun, Jinwoo, Dohyun and Hyunwoo itself, while the children born in Korea today are built from 서, 지, 하 and 유. The older set is heavier in the mouth and ends on consonants more often; the new one glides. None of this makes Hyunwoo dated so much as adult — it is the name of a colleague rather than a classmate. Why parents choose it
For Korean parents the appeal is dignity without stiffness, and for Korean-American families it is a name that an English speaker can approximate at first attempt while remaining entirely Korean. The one thing to know before committing is that the opening is a single syllable. English speakers reflexively give it two, and HIGH-un-woo is a hard habit to break once a class register has learned it.
Middle names for Hyunwoo

Famous Hyunwoos
Kim Hyun-woo won Olympic gold in Greco-Roman wrestling at London 2012, beating a field that had not expected him and becoming one of the meet's better stories. Lee Hyun-woo, born 1993, went from child actor to lead in Secretly, Greatly and has worked steadily in Korean film and television since. Both are the right age for the name, which is the point: Hyunwoo's generation is now in its thirties and running things.
Consider instead
Dohyun keeps 현 and moves it to the back. Seunghyun comes from the same cohort with the same grown-up weight. Jinwoo shares the ending and trades brilliance for steadiness.
