History & meaning
Imanol carries a whole sentence: God with us. The Hebrew is ʿImmanu El, two words, from the sign given to King Ahaz at Isaiah 7:14 and quoted in Matthew's nativity — a prophecy rather than a personal name, which is why Christian Europe used it as a title long before anyone used it as a name. Spanish took the shortened Manuel and made it one of the commonest names in the language, Portuguese did the same, and Basque produced Imanol.
The Basque form is a twentieth-century regularisation rather than a village invention, and it comes out of the project that produced most of this cluster: Sabino Arana's Deun-Ixendegi Euzkotarra of 1910, which gave Basque speakers a saint's name for every occasion in their own language rather than in Castilian. Some of those forms adapted what people already said; others were built from scratch. Imanol belongs with the adaptations — Emmanuel run through Basque sound patterns until the vowels and the stress sit right, with none of the doubled letters Latin left behind — and it is now so thoroughly domesticated that Basque speakers are sometimes surprised to be told what it is.
Why parents choose it
It is a devotional name that wears its devotion lightly, and it has an unusual shape for a Spanish register: three syllables that rise and then stop dead on the l. Basque families who wanted Manuel without the grandfather attached took this instead.
