History & meaning
Iñaki was coined to honour a saint who did not, in fact, bear the name it translates. The target was Ignacio — Ignatius, from the Roman family name Egnatius, probably Etruscan, later attached by folk etymology to Latin ignis, fire. Sabino Arana needed a Basque form for the patron of Bizkaia and of the Basque Country, Ignatius of Loyola, and his 1910 Deun-Ixendegi Euzkotarra produced this one: the Latin stem cut down, given a Basque diminutive ending, with the n palatalised to ñ the way Basque palatalises for warmth.
Here is the twist. The saint from Loyola was baptised Íñigo, the Castilian form of the old Basque Eneko, and he used that name for the first four decades of his life. Ignatius came later, in Italy, and the equation between the two was fixed by his biographer Pedro de Ribadeneira, who wrote as though they were one name. They are not one; they share no root. So Iñaki is a Basque name, built from a Latin name, to commemorate a Basque man whose actual name was a different Basque name entirely. Basque parents adopted it anyway, in very large numbers, and by mid-century it had become the name people outside Spain most readily identify as Basque.
Why parents choose it
It is the most immediately placeable Basque name there is, which cuts both ways — recognised at once, never neutral. The sound is friendly, the ñ is the only spelling difficulty, and abroad it usually settles as Inaki without much loss.

Iñaki Perurena, from Leitza in Navarre, was the best-known harrijasotzaile — stone-lifter — of his generation, in a sport that is entirely Basque and entirely serious.
