History & meaning
Īśāna is a participle doing the work of a title: the one exercising power, the owner, the lord. The root īś sits under a good deal of Sanskrit religious vocabulary, including īśvara and the first word of the Īśa Upanishad, īśāvāsyam idaṃ sarvam, all this is pervaded by the Lord. Used alone, the word belongs to Shiva. He is addressed as Īśāna in the Śatarudriya litany of the Yajurveda, and in the Sadāśiva form he has five faces, of which Īśāna is the fifth, turned upward toward the zenith while the other four face the horizons.
The fifth face explains the compass reference. Īśāna is the dikpāla, the guardian, of the north-east, and that quarter is treated as the most auspicious corner of any built space. Anyone who has watched a house being planned in India will have heard the word īśānya: it is where the water source and the prayer room are meant to go. The double-a spelling is recent. Adding a letter to a name for numerological reasons is a widespread modern habit in India, and Ishaan against Ishan is one of its most visible results. The rest of the field is at Indian names.
Why parents choose it
It is devotional and contemporary at once, which is a hard combination to find. Ishaan gives a family a name of Shiva without the formality of Mahadev or Shankar, and English speakers get it right on the first attempt more often than not.

Famous Ishaans
Ishaan Khatter has acted in Beyond the Clouds, Dhadak and The Perfect Couple. Ishan Kishan, in the shorter spelling, keeps wicket and opens for India. The name also carries a fictional weight in India that is hard to overstate: Ishaan Awasthi is the dyslexic eight-year-old at the centre of Taare Zameen Par, released in 2007.
Consider instead
Dev takes the general word for a god rather than a specific one. Karthik names Murugan, Shiva's son, and is the southern equivalent in feel. Rohan means ascending and gives you the modern sound without the theology.
