History & meaning

Start with the god, because the name is only a wrapper for him. In the Sanskrit epics he is Skanda or Kumara or Kārttikeya, a son of Shiva who commands the armies of the gods and then largely leaves the story. In Tamil he is Murugan, and he is not a supporting character at all. The oldest Tamil poetry, the Sangam anthologies, already knows him as Seyon, the red god of the hill country, and the Tolkāppiyam assigns him the kuṟiñci landscape of mountains and secret love. Six temples across Tamil Nadu — Palani, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, Pazhamudircholai and Thiruparankundram — are counted as his war camps, and the walk to Palani draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Two traditions, one deity, and radically different centres of gravity: that gap is the whole reason a single Sanskrit epithet became a Tamil household name.

The etymology runs through the sky. The Krittikas are the Pleiades, six stars imagined as six nurses; the child born of Shiva's fire was given to them, took six faces so that all six could feed him at once, and is therefore Ārumugam, the six-faced, as well as Kārttikeya, the one belonging to the Krittikas. The lunar month named for the same stars, Kārttikai, closes with Karthigai Deepam, when oil lamps go up at every doorway and an enormous beacon is lit on the hill at Tiruvannamalai. North of the Vindhyas the same month gives the name Kartik and the festival Kartik Purnima, which is why the name travels well beyond Tamil Nadu while meaning something slightly different at each stop.

Why parents choose it

This is a devotional choice and worth naming as one. In much of Tamil Nadu, Murugan is the god of the house, the one addressed for exams and for illness, and Karthik puts the child under that protection in two easy syllables. It is also the rare Tamil name that a stranger anywhere in India will read correctly on the first attempt. For the wider field, see Indian names.

Famous Karthiks

Karthi, born Karthik Sivakumar in 1977, is one of Tamil cinema's leading men and the younger brother of the actor Suriya. Karthik Subbaraj directs at the sharper end of the same industry, with Jigarthanda and Petta behind him. In Hindi film the northern spelling belongs to Kartik Aaryan, and the playback singer known simply as Karthik has been recording in Tamil and Telugu since the early 2000s.

Surya is the sun god under his own name, and just as at home in Tamil Nadu. Vetri gives you a pure Tamil word with no religious obligation attached. Selvan is gentler in sense and rarer in the register office.
