Jaap is Jacob compressed into one syllable, and the first thing to fix is the letter it starts with. In Dutch, J is always Y. The name begins the way yard does.

History & meaning

The Hebrew is Ya'aqov, and Genesis explains it in the birth story: the second twin came out gripping Esau's heel, and aqev is the Hebrew for heel. The sense of supplanter grew out of that scene rather than out of the word itself, and it fitted a man who took his brother's birthright and his father's blessing. Church Latin turned him into Iacobus, and from Iacobus the Low Countries produced a whole shelf of names: Jacobus on the certificate, then Jacob, Jaco, Ko, Coba for a daughter, and Jaap. His scallop shell is still the Dutch word for the thing, a jakobsschelp, because pilgrims brought them home from Santiago de Compostela, which is Saint Jacob in Spanish clothing.

Jaap also explains why Dutch looks the way it does on paper. The language marks a long vowel by writing it twice in a closed syllable and once in an open one: maan is a moon and manen is moons, with the same vowel throughout. Every doubled letter in the Dutch name stock is that rule at work, which is why the short registered forms come out as Jaap, Daan, Kees, Maarten, Joost and Guus rather than with a silent e or a doubled consonant. It is not decoration. Take one a out of Jaap and a Dutch reader would say something closer to yap.

Why parents choose it

At home it is warm, plain and slightly rural, the name of a man good with his hands. Abroad it costs you something: an English speaker will read the J as a J and the aa as a puzzle, and you will spend a lifetime correcting both.

Consider instead

Jacob is the full name and one of the most-used in the English-speaking world. James is the same Hebrew original by a different Latin road. Kees does to Cornelis exactly what Jaap does to Jacobus, if the shape is what appeals.
