History & meaning
Punjabi builds names the way German builds nouns, out of interchangeable parts. A first element supplies the subject — jag the world, har God, gur the Guru, sat truth, man the mind, bal strength, sukh peace — and a second element supplies what happens to it: -jit conquering, -preet love, -deep lamp, -meet friend, -inder lordly. The pieces combine almost freely, which is how one small vocabulary produces Harjit, Manjit, Baljit, Amarjit, Paramjit, Sukhjit, Harpreet, Manpreet, Gurdeep and Satinder without repeating itself. Jagjit is jagat plus jit: the world, conquered.
The system has a consequence English speakers usually miss. These compounds carry no gender. Nothing in Jagjit, Manjit, Harpreet or Amrit says boy or girl; the sex is signalled by the Singh or Kaur that follows, so Jagjit Singh is a man and Jagjit Kaur is a woman and the given name is identical. That is a genuinely different arrangement from most Indian naming, where the ending does the work — and it is the reason a Punjabi first name on a form tells a reader far less than they assume. Fittingly, the two most famous bearers were married to each other: the singer Jagjit Singh and his wife and recording partner Chitra Singh.

Famous Jagjits
Jagjit Singh, 1941 to 2011, took the ghazal out of the courtly recital and put it on cassette. Born in Sri Ganganagar and trained in classical music, he recorded The Unforgettables with Chitra Singh in 1976, sang the songs of Mahesh Bhatt's Arth in 1982, and set Ghalib for the 1988 television serial. He is the reason a form of Persian-derived Urdu poetry became ordinary listening in Indian households.
