History & meaning
The parts are transparent Sanskrit and the compound is a soldier's: raṇa, battle, and jita, conquered. Punjabi absorbed both long ago and treats -jit as a live suffix rather than a fossil, which is why the language has Harjit, Manjit, Baljit, Amarjit and dozens more beside Ranjit. One bearer swamps the rest. Ranjit Singh, born in 1780, took Lahore at nineteen, was proclaimed Maharaja in 1801, and welded the scattered Sikh misls into a state that ran from the Khyber Pass to the Sutlej and held the British at its border for forty years. He was blind in one eye from childhood smallpox, indifferent to ceremony, and remembered as Sher-e-Punjab, the Lion of Punjab. The empire outlasted him by only ten years.
That title points at the other thing worth knowing here. At Vaisakhi in 1699 the tenth Guru, Gobind Singh, founded the Khalsa and gave every initiated man the name Singh and every woman Kaur — lion and princess. The purpose was blunt: caste in Punjab was carried in surnames, and a shared name abolished the signal. Sikhs today still carry Singh or Kaur, sometimes as a surname, more often as a middle name with a family or village name after it. Two caveats keep the fact honest. Singh long predates Sikhism as a Rajput title and is used by Hindus as well, so the name alone tells you nothing certain; and Ranjit itself is not a religious name at all — it is ordinary Punjabi vocabulary that happens to have been worn by the greatest Sikh ruler.
