History & meaning
The Hebrew Yonah means dove, and it means nothing more elaborate than that — no compound, no divine element, just the bird. That plainness is unusual among the prophets, whose names tend to be sentences about God: Isaiah is salvation of the Lord, Jeremiah is the Lord exalts, Micah is who is like God. Jonah is a dove. Whether the writer intended the irony is impossible to know, but the man who carries the peace-bird's name spends four chapters running from an errand of mercy.
The Book of Jonah is the reason the name has weight, and it is a strange book. Told to go east and preach to Nineveh, Jonah books passage west to Tarshish; a storm comes, the sailors throw him overboard at his own suggestion, and he is swallowed by what the Hebrew calls a great fish — dag gadol, not a whale, which entered the story through later translation and centuries of woodcuts. He is spat out, preaches a five-word sermon, and the entire city repents, which infuriates him. The book closes not with a moral but with a question God asks Jonah and Jonah never answers, the only prophetic book in the Bible to end that way. The story travelled: Jonah appears in the Quran as Yunus, with the tenth sura named for him, and in Matthew's gospel the three days in the fish become the sign of Jonah.

Jonah is soft where most Old Testament boy names are hard. There is no plosive in it, the stress falls on an open first syllable, and it ends in a vowel sound that runs into almost any surname. It also comes with a story a four-year-old already knows, which not every biblical name can offer, and the story is comic and humane rather than martial.
