Joris

History & meaning
Georgios is a job description: gē, the earth, and ergon, work, so a farmer or tiller of soil. The saint who carried it was a soldier of the eastern empire, probably from Cappadocia, executed under Diocletian, and for the first eight hundred years of his cult there was no dragon anywhere near him. The dragon and the rescued princess were attached in the high Middle Ages and fixed by the Golden Legend around 1260. The name went west with the crusading armies, Old French turned Georgius into Jorge and Joris, and Dutch took it from the French rather than from the Greek, which is why the initial consonant is a y sound and not a hard g.
In the Low Countries the saint had a job. Every walled town kept shooting guilds for its defence, and the men who shot the crossbow served under Sint-Joris while the handbow companies took Saint Sebastian. The guilds had their own grounds, called doelen, their own feasts and an annual king, chosen by whoever brought the wooden popinjay down from its pole. When those companies commissioned group portraits they created the militia painting, one of the best genres of the Golden Age. Further south he is still fought in public: at the Ducasse de Mons in Belgium, Saint George duels a dragon in the square every Trinity Sunday.
Why parents choose it
It gives you George without the kings and without the crowd, in two easy syllables. The meaning is one of the plainest in the European name stock, and there is something to be said for a name that means one who works the ground. In English-speaking countries you will spell it out every time.

Joris Ivens spent sixty years making documentaries, from the film poetry of The Bridge and Rain in the late 1920s to a last film about the wind in China, working in Spain, Indonesia and Vietnam and falling out with several governments on the way. Joris Hoefnagel, born in Antwerp in 1542, painted insects and flowers into illuminated manuscripts with a precision that closed the medieval tradition. Joris Voorn is among the best-known Dutch electronic producers working today.
