History & meaning
Julen reaches back to a Roman clan that claimed descent from a goddess. Latin Iulianus means "belonging to the Julii", the family of Julius Caesar, who traced their line to Iulus, son of Aeneas, son of Venus. Christianity supplied the saints — Julian the Hospitaller above all, patron of innkeepers and ferrymen — and Iulianus became Julián in Spanish, Julien in French, Julian in English and Julen in Basque, with the Latin ending trimmed off in the usual Basque way.
That trimming is systematic, and it is why so many Basque men's names end on a bare consonant. Latin and Romance names arrive carrying a vowel ending — Iulianus, Marcellus, Michael by way of Miguel — and Basque strips the grammatical tail and keeps the stem: Julen, Markel, Mikel. The result is a set of names that rhyme with each other and with nothing in Spanish. Julen became genuinely fashionable once Basque forms were allowed back onto Spanish birth certificates in 1977, and it has stayed among the standard choices in the Basque provinces ever since, while remaining almost invisible in America.
