History & meaning
Ask what Kaito means and the honest answer is a question back: written how. The first half is usually 海, sea, and where it is, the sea is really there. The second half is the interesting one. 斗 is the Big Dipper — the constellation Japanese calls Hokuto, the seven northern stars — and it doubles as an obsolete measure of volume, roughly eighteen litres of rice. In a name it is doing very little semantic work. Parents choose it because it is short, angular and reads as masculine, the way English parents choose an -ax or a -den. So 海斗 is not a sentence about a sea and a star. It is the sea, plus a good-looking ending.
Swap the characters and the picture changes completely. 海翔 adds 翔, to soar, and is genuinely the commonest spelling now; 海渡 is a crossing by sea; 快斗 opens with 快, quick or pleasant, and has nothing to do with water at all. That last one produced the name's most famous fictional bearer: Kaito Kuroba, the gentleman thief of Gosho Aoyama's Magic Kaito and a recurring guest in Detective Conan, whose name is a deliberate pun on kaitō, phantom thief. A Japanese reader hears the joke instantly. An English reader never will.
Why parents choose it
Kaito is one of the few Japanese names an English speaker gets right without coaching, because KYE-toh maps onto sounds English already owns. It carries an obvious sea association for families who want one, and it comes with Kai built in as a short form that needs no explanation anywhere. In Japan it now reads faintly of the millennium generation, in the way Jayden does in America.
Middle names for Kaito

Famous Kaitos
Kaito Ishikawa, who writes his name 界人, is among the busiest voice actors of his generation in Japan, known abroad for Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia and Genos in One-Punch Man. Kaito Toba races in Moto3 and won a grand prix in the class in 2019. There is also KAITO, the male Vocaloid voicebank Yamaha and Crypton released in 2006, which is not a person but has a discography, and the fictional thief above.
Consider instead
Kai is the same sea character alone, shorter and passport-ready. Riku is its exact opposite, land instead of sea, with a settled meaning rather than a variable one. Haruto shares the -to tail and the same generation of Japanese fashion.
