History & meaning
Kalani is ka lani run together, the singular article plus a noun — the article rule itself belongs to the Keanu page. Lani is the sky, the heavens, the upper region, and it is also, with no metaphor marker and no apology, a high chief. Hawaiian rank was genealogical and sacred: the aliʻi traced descent from the gods, and the most senior of them were spoken of in the language of the sky because that is where the line was held to begin. A chief of the very highest kapu could not be looked at directly; the kapu moe required commoners to lie face down in his presence, and even his shadow falling on a house made the house his.
So the element turns up at the head of the great names. Kalaniʻōpuʻu was the ruling chief of Hawaiʻi island when Cook's ships arrived in 1779, and it was he who laid a feathered cloak over the captain's shoulders. Kalanikūpule was the last ruling chief of Oʻahu, defeated at Nuʻuanu in 1795 in the campaign that gave Kamehameha the archipelago. Chiefly names ran long, packing in circumstance and lineage, and Kalani was the opening move in a great many of them. Modern usage has cut the tail off and kept the head, which is why an ordinary child in Kaimukī today can carry the first word of a king's name.
Why parents choose it
Two meanings for the price of one, and both are good: a sky name for parents who want something airy, a royal name for parents who want weight. It is also the gentlest of the Hawaiian k-names in the mouth — all open vowels, no diphthong, nothing to explain.

Famous Kalanis
Kalaniʻōpuʻu is the historical anchor, and his feather cloak — held in New Zealand for well over a century before returning to Honolulu on loan in 2016 — is one of the most travelled objects in Hawaiian history. In the present day the name belongs to the surfer Kalani Robb, a fixture of 1990s professional surfing, and to Kalani Sitake, the college football head coach at Brigham Young University. It is a name that reads as thoroughly Pacific in any room.
