Keanu is two Hawaiian words with the seam still showing, and learning where the seam falls unlocks a whole shelf of names. Hawaiian has one singular word for "the", and it takes two shapes: ka is the default, and ke replaces it before words beginning with k, e, a or o, a rule students remember as KEAO. So ke anu, the coolness, becomes Keanu; ke ahi, the fire, becomes Keahi; ke aloha, the love, becomes Kealoha; ke kai, the sea, becomes Kekai. Nouns starting with other letters keep ka: ka noa gives Kanoa and ka lani gives Kalani. The plural article nā builds Nākoa, the warriors. None of this is decoration. These names are ordinary Hawaiian phrases, and a speaker hears them as phrases.
Anu by itself is cool, cold, the chill that settles on high ground after dark, and it is a pleasant thing in a tropical climate rather than a harsh one. The often-repeated translation "cool breeze over the mountains" is an expansion of that image rather than a literal reading; the dictionary gives coolness, and the breeze is inference. Outside Hawaii the name travels attached to one man. Keanu Reeves has said he was named for a great-uncle on his Hawaiian father's side, and from the early 1990s his career carried a Hawaiian phrase into every country with a cinema, which is not something that has happened to any other name on this list.
