History & meaning
Of the sun words in Sanskrit, this is the one with the deepest roots. Sūrya descends from the Indo-European word that also produced Latin sol, Greek hēlios, Avestan hvar and English sun, so a child called Surya carries a syllable that has been in continuous use for something like five thousand years. He is also a person. Surya crosses the sky in a chariot pulled by seven horses, and the reins are held by Arun, the red of daybreak. He fathers Yama and the Ashvins, and in the Mahabharata he fathers Karna, the tragic archer who fights on the wrong side of the war.
He is one of the five deities of the traditional pañcāyatana household worship, and unusually for a Vedic god he kept his temples. The greatest is at Konark on the Odisha coast, built around 1250 as a colossal chariot with twenty-four carved stone wheels and a team of seven horses; the earlier Modhera temple in Gujarat is aligned so that the light reaches the sanctum at the equinox. The name is often heard in the south, where Suriya is the ordinary spelling, while northern families more often reach for Aditya or Ravi for the same idea. See also Indian names.
Why parents choose it
Surya is the unhedged version: not an epithet, not a synonym, the god under his own name. It is a large thing to give a child and most parents who choose it mean it. The sound helps, since English speakers manage it without coaching.

Suriya, born Saravanan Sivakumar, is one of the biggest stars in Tamil cinema. Suryakumar Yadav bats for India and has captained the Twenty20 side. Surya Sen, hanged in 1934, led the Chittagong armoury raid against British rule and remains a national figure in Bengal.
