History & meaning
Almost every famous name in the Shahnameh belongs to a king or a champion. Kaveh is a blacksmith, and that is the whole point of him. Zahhak, the usurper with two serpents growing from his shoulders, has ruled for a thousand years and each day two young men are killed to feed them. Kaveh has lost son after son to the kitchens. When he is summoned to sign a testimonial declaring Zahhak a just ruler, he tears the document up in open court, walks out, lifts his leather apron onto a spear shaft and carries it through the streets as a banner. The people follow it to Fereydun, who takes the throne and chains Zahhak inside Mount Damavand.
The apron had an afterlife. Later kings jewelled and enlarged it, and the Derafsh Kaviani became the battle standard of the Sasanian empire until it was captured and cut up for loot in the seventh century. That is why Kaveh reads politically in a way most Persian names do not: he is the ordinary man who starts the rising, and both Iranian and Kurdish traditions have claimed him as such, the Kurdish Newroz story making Kawa the blacksmith the founder of the new year. The etymology of the name itself is genuinely unclear. Middle Persian gives Kawag, and one plausible line connects it to kavi, the ancient Iranian word for a ruler-priest.
Why parents choose it
It is two syllables, easy in English, and it carries a story about refusing an unjust order rather than winning a battle. Families who want a Persian name with backbone but no sword tend to land here. The spelling is stable, which cannot be said of every name that comes out of the epic.

Kaveh Madani is an Iranian environmental scientist who served as deputy head of Iran's Department of Environment before moving to academic work abroad.
