History & meaning
The root kh-l-d means to abide, to last, to go on without end, and it is a serious word in Arabic rather than a decorative one. It is the vocabulary of the hereafter: the Qur'an repeatedly describes those in the garden or the fire as khālidīn, abiding there. Khalid is the participle of that verb, so the name is a wish rather than a description — nobody is claiming the child will not die, only asking that something of him will not. That is a slightly different proposition from the strength and victory names it usually sits beside, and it is worth knowing before choosing it.
The bearer who fixed the name in history is Khalid ibn al-Walid. He fought against the Muslims at Uhud in 625, came over before the conquest of Mecca, and then commanded in the Ridda campaigns and against both the Sasanians and the Byzantines, most famously at the Yarmouk in 636. His epithet, Sayf Allah al-Maslul, translates as the Drawn Sword of God. The caliph Umar removed him from supreme command in 638, and he died a few years later at Homs, in bed — a fact the sources record with some irony, since he is said to have remarked on how strange it was for a man of his career. The great mosque at Homs carries his name and his tomb.

Khalid is a rare thing: an Arabic name with genuine historical heft that an English-speaking classroom will not mangle. Two syllables, stress at the front, no vowel sounds outside the English inventory. The initial kh is the only hurdle and it is optional. Since 2017 it has also had an American pop-cultural presence, which for some families is the reason to choose it and for others the reason not to.

The El Paso singer Khalid, born Khalid Donnel Robinson, released American Teen in 2017 and has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards. Khalid bin Abdulaziz was king of Saudi Arabia from 1975 to 1982. Under the Khaled spelling, the novelist Khaled Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.
