History & meaning
The root ṭ-r-q is about striking: knocking at a door, beating metal, beating a path. From the last of those comes ṭarīq, a road, and from the first comes ṭāriq, the one who knocks — specifically someone who arrives after dark, since a daytime caller does not need to. Arabic then transferred the word to the sky, to a star bright enough to announce itself at night. What is unusual is that the name comes with its own definition attached: chapter 86 of the Qur'an is called At-Tariq, opens by swearing by the night-comer, asks the listener what the night-comer is, and answers itself — the piercing star. Few names are glossed inside the text that made them famous.
The historical Tariq is Tariq ibn Ziyad, a Berber commander in Umayyad service who crossed the strait from North Africa in 711 with an army, defeated the Visigothic king Roderic, and began eight centuries of Muslim rule in the Iberian peninsula. The rock he landed beneath became Jabal Tariq, Tariq's mountain, and Spanish speakers wore that down to Gibraltar — one of the very few place names in western Europe that is somebody's given name in Arabic. The famous story that he burned his ships behind him to remove any thought of retreat appears only in much later sources and is best treated as legend rather than record.
