History & meaning
Tuesday is Benada, and the boy born on it is Kwabena — one of the seven Akan day-names, the system in which the weekday of birth supplies a child's first name automatically, described in full under Kwame. What distinguishes Tuesday is the water. In Akan belief the day belongs to the ocean, and along the Fante coast that is not a metaphor: Tuesday is a closed day, no canoe goes out, the sea is left alone. Tuesday-born people are traditionally called compassionate and even-handed, and the name is often given its ceremonial appellation, Ogyam, glossed as the kind or generous one. The girls' equivalent is Abena.
Spelling depends on where you stand. Ashanti and Akuapem Twi speakers write Kwabena; Fante speakers along the shore write Kobina or Kobena, dropping the labial glide, and pronounce it koh-BEE-nah. Baoulé speakers in Côte d'Ivoire arrive at Kobenan and Konan. Eighteenth-century plantation clerks in Jamaica and Barbados wrote what they heard as Cubbena or Quabena, and those spellings sit in the same registers as Cuffee and Cudjoe — Akan day-names carried across the Atlantic by enslaved people from the Gold Coast and kept in use for generations. Unlike some of its siblings, Kwabena did not survive as a common Caribbean surname, but the record of it is unambiguous.

The highlife singer Kwabena Kwabena, who uses the name twice, has been a mainstay of Ghanaian radio since the mid-2000s.
