History & meaning
From the late eighth century Norse ships worked the Scottish west coast, and by the tenth their crews had settled the Hebrides and much of the seaboard. Gaelic speakers needed a word for where these people came from and used Lochlann — read as the land of lochs, which is a fair description of a fjord coast seen from Argyll. Lochlannach meant a Norseman. Turned into a personal name, Lachlann said something specific about a boy: his people were of that stock. Few names carry a piece of political history quite so directly, and it is worth saying that the loch reading is the traditional one rather than the only one scholars have proposed.
The name settled into the Highlands, above all among the MacLachlans of Argyll, whose surname is literally son of Lachlan. Then the Highland clearances and Scottish emigration carried it to the far side of the world, where it took root as nowhere else. Lachlan Macquarie, a Gaelic-speaking Hebridean from Ulva, governed New South Wales from 1810 to 1821 and stamped his name across the map of Australia — the Lachlan River was named for him by the explorer John Oxley. Australians have been naming sons Lachlan ever since, and it remains far commoner in Sydney than in Scotland.
