History & meaning
Columba is simply the Latin word for a dove, and it belonged to the Irish monk who sailed from Donegal to the island of Iona in 563 and, from that tiny base, did more than anyone to christianise the west of Scotland. In Irish he was Colum Cille, "dove of the church". Gaelic speakers in Scotland shortened the Latin to Colum and then to Calum, and the name stayed close to the saint for a thousand years — most powerfully in Máel Coluim, "devotee of Columba", which English rendered as Malcolm and which was borne by four kings of Scots.
Calum remained a Highland and Hebridean name, thick on the ground in Argyll and the islands and thin everywhere else, until the late twentieth century. Then the spelling Callum, with a second L and no Gaelic training required, carried it out into the rest of Britain: it became a fixture of Scottish birth registers in the 1990s and travelled to England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand behind it. America, which took Liam and Declan enthusiastically, has so far left Callum alone.

For American families it is the rare Celtic name that is still genuinely unexpected while being impossible to mispronounce — no silent consonants, no coaching, nothing like the hurdle of Ruairí. It also delivers Cal without delivering Calvin, and the dove behind it is a gentler image than the warriors and princes that crowd this corner of the name book.
