The h in Matheus does no phonetic work whatsoever, and that is the interesting part. Standard Portuguese spells the name Mateus; Brazil writes Matheus so consistently that the plain spelling now looks European there. The same ornamental h turns Tiago into Thiago and Tales into Thales. It is not invention: the h is the Greek theta of Matthaios and the Latin Matthaeus showing through, which makes the Brazilian spelling the more etymological one and the Portuguese spelling the more modernised.
Behind both is Hebrew Mattityahu, gift of Yahweh, shortened to Mattai and given to the tax collector called away from his booth in the ninth chapter of the gospel that bears his name. Matheus is a Portuguese-derived name and sits in that layer of Brazilian naming, the imported European half, in contrast with the Tupi names — Cauã, Guaraci — that the country also gives its children. One consequence of its 1990s peak is demographic: a Brazilian Matheus today is more likely to be finishing a degree than starting school.
