History & meaning
明 is the rare Chinese character whose logic is visible at a glance. Sun on the left, moon on the right, the two sources of light in one square, and the word is brightness. Chinese then does what Chinese does and extends it: 明白 míngbai, bright-and-white, is the ordinary verb for understanding something; 明确 is to make a thing unambiguous; 明天 and 明年 are tomorrow and next year, the days on which the light comes round again. A name meaning bright in English sounds like a compliment about intelligence. 明 covers that, but it also covers clarity of conduct, the quality of being easy to see through in the good sense.
Zhu Yuanzhang, a peasant who ended up leading the rebellion that pushed the Mongols out, took 明 as his dynastic name in 1368, and three centuries of porcelain, walls and sea voyages have kept the syllable in English ever since. The character travelled further than the dynasty did. Vietnam borrowed it whole: Minh is one of the most-given Vietnamese boys' names, and Ho Chi Minh's name is written 胡志明, three characters a Mandarin reader pronounces Hu Zhiming. Japan reads the same graph as one of the standard writings of Akira. Few Chinese names have crossed as many borders while keeping their sense intact.
Why parents choose it
It is short, it is legible to every literate reader in East Asia, and it says something parents actually want to say without saying it loudly. There is also the practical argument: an English speaker meeting Ming for the first time will pronounce it correctly, which is not true of most single-syllable Mandarin names.
Middle names for Ming

Famous Mings
Yao Ming, the 7ft 6in centre who anchored the Houston Rockets for nine seasons and entered the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, did more for the name in English than four centuries of porcelain. The chef Ming Tsai built a public career on it from the other direction, through the restaurant Blue Ginger and the long-running series Simply Ming. Both are surname-first in Chinese order and given-name Ming, which is worth noting, because plenty of syllables that look like given names in English turn out to be family names.
Consider instead
The same character in another language gives Minh in Vietnamese and Akira in Japanese, both genuinely 明 and both with their own history. Staying in Chinese, Hui, commonly written 辉, is radiance rather than daylight, the brightness a fire or a polished surface throws.
