History & meaning
Medieval England did not say Michael. It said Michel, following French, and English mouths turned that into something close to MITCH-el. When surnames hardened in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries that pronunciation was fossilised in writing as Mitchell, Mitchel and Michell — patronymics, for the most part, marking the son of the man everybody called Michel. The archangel behind it all is one of the few angels named in the Hebrew Bible, and his name is a challenge thrown at rival gods: mi ka-el, who is like God.
There is a second, quieter source, and honest reference works give both. Middle English had michel, or mickle further north, meaning big, and it produced bynames for large men that fell together with the Michael surnames in spelling. Any given Mitchell family may descend from either. As a first name it belongs to the American habit of promoting surnames, and it had a long run late in the twentieth century. Australia took to it at the same time, which is why the Australian cricket team of the 2010s could field Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh at once.
