Mykhailo
Kyiv's coat of arms shows the Archangel Michael with a raised sword, which makes Mykhailo more than the local spelling of a common name. It is the city's own, and it is Ukrainian rather than Russian: Mykhailo, not Mikhail.

History & meaning
The Hebrew name is a question with a silent answer. Michael appears in Daniel as the prince who stands guard over Israel and in Revelation as the commander who leads the angels against the dragon, so a name that means "who is like God" attaches to the figure whose entire job is to insist that nobody is. Greek turned it into Michael, Church Slavonic passed it east, and Ukrainian gave it the ending it gives most men's names of this class: the final -o that also produces Petro, Pavlo, Dmytro and Danylo where Russian has Pyotr, Pavel, Dmitri and Daniil.
Kyiv adopted the archangel as its protector centuries ago and has kept him on the city seal ever since. St Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, founded in the twelfth century, was demolished in 1936 and rebuilt between 1997 and 1999 on the same site. That history is a large part of why the name reads as specifically Ukrainian rather than generically Slavic, whatever the shared Hebrew root.

It offers the reassurance of one of the most-used names in the Western world without surrendering the Ukrainian form. Abroad, Mykhailo travels under Michael when it has to and returns to itself at home, which is a practical arrangement rather than a compromise.

Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky wrote Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, filmed by Sergei Parajanov in 1965. The footballer Mykhailo Mudryk carries the name for a younger audience.
