Pavlo
The apostle who wrote half the New Testament went by a Roman surname meaning small. In Ukrainian he is Pavlo, a name carried by a hetman, a great modernist poet and the country's favourite satirist. Pavel is the Russian form.

History & meaning
Saul of Tarsus was a Roman citizen, and Paulus was the ordinary Latin cognomen he used once his work took him into the Greek and Roman cities. It means small, and the apostle made a virtue of it. In the eastern church he is never named alone: his feast is shared with Peter, and the summer fast that ends on it is called Petrivka, which is why Petro and Pavlo have always travelled together in Ukrainian villages. The Ukrainian form ends in -o where the Russian Pavel ends in a consonant — the same divide described on the Petro page, and the reason Pavlo is a name rather than a spelling of one.
Ukrainian history gives the name three very different men. Pavlo Polubotok, acting hetman of the Cossack Hetmanate, was arrested for resisting tsarist control and died in the Peter and Paul Fortress in 1724, leaving behind the durable legend of a treasure he was said to have deposited in a London bank. Pavlo Skoropadskyi, descended from an eighteenth-century hetman, governed the Ukrainian State from April to December 1918 and fell when his German backers withdrew. Pavlo Tychyna published Clarinets of the Sun in 1918, one of the founding books of Ukrainian modernism, before the pressure of the 1930s bent his work permanently.
Why parents choose it
Biblical, short, softly stressed on the first syllable, and equipped with Paul as an instant translation. It is the kind of name that sounds settled rather than fashionable.
Middle names for Pavlo

Famous Pavlos
Pavlo Tychyna is one of the essential Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. Pavlo Skoropadskyi ruled Ukraine for eight months in 1918 as hetman. Pavlo Hubenko, writing as Ostap Vyshnia, was the most widely read Ukrainian humorist of the interwar years and survived a decade in the camps.
