Mykola
Ukrainian children do not wait for Santa. They wait for Sviatyi Mykolai, who comes on the night before his feast and leaves something under the pillow. Mykola is that saint's name in ordinary use, and it is the Ukrainian form of Nicholas, not a spelling of Russian Nikolai.

History & meaning
Nikolaos is a Greek compound of the kind that turns a wish into a name: victory belonging to the people. Its bearer was the fourth-century bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, remembered for slipping gold through a poor man's window so his daughters could marry, and later adopted as patron of sailors, merchants, prisoners and children. Sailors carried his cult everywhere, including up the Dnipro, and he became the most-painted saint in Ukrainian churches after the Mother of God. Ukrainian shifted the stress to the end and made Mykola; Russian says Nikolai. Each is the name in its own language.
The feast is where Mykola belongs to Ukrainian childhood specifically. Sviatyi Mykolai comes on the eve of his day, leaves sweets and a small gift under the pillow for children who behaved and a birch switch for those who did not, and is met with Mykolai fairs, school plays and letters. The tradition long predates the Soviet attempt to move gift-giving to New Year and Did Moroz, and it has strengthened since 2023, when the Orthodox Church of Ukraine adopted the new calendar and the state moved Christmas to 25 December. Why parents choose it
It is the warmest of the traditional Ukrainian names, tied to a feast every child looks forward to, and Kolia is about as affectionate as a short form gets.

Famous Mykolas
Mykola Lysenko founded Ukrainian classical music, collected hundreds of folk songs and wrote the opera Taras Bulba. Mykola Leontovych arranged the New Year chant Shchedryk, first performed in Kyiv in 1916, which the English-speaking world sings as Carol of the Bells; he was murdered by a Cheka agent in 1921. Mykola Hohol, born at Sorochyntsi in the Poltava region, is the writer English readers know as Nikolai Gogol.

Nicholas is the same saint in English. Petro matches it for age and church footing. Vasyl belongs to the other great feast-day name of the Ukrainian winter.
