History & meaning
Basil the Great, bishop of Caesarea in the fourth century, wrote the monastic rule the eastern church still follows and the liturgy served on his feast and a handful of other days each year. His name simply means kingly, from basileus, and it came to Rus with the church so early that it was the baptismal name Volodymyr the Great took in 988, after his new brother-in-law, the emperor Basil II. Ukrainian stresses the second syllable and drops the Greek ending: Vasyl. Russian says Vasily. The Ukrainian form is the name here, not a shortening of the Russian one.
What fixes Vasyl in Ukrainian life is the winter feast. St Basil's day falls on the old new year, so the evening before is Malanka, when mummers in masks — the goat, the bear, the bride — go from house to house, and the morning is posivannia, when boys scatter wheat across the floor with the rhyme siyu, viyu, posivaiu, z Novym rokom vas vitaiu, I sow and I wish you a happy new year. Households pay in coins and pastries. The custom is older than the church that hosts it, and it survives the calendar reform of 2023 in the usual Ukrainian way, by being kept twice.

Vasyl Stus, the poet of the dissident generation, died in a Perm labour camp in 1985 while on hunger strike, weeks after being nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Vasyl Symonenko was the sharpest voice of the sixtiers and died at twenty-eight in 1963. Vasyl Lomachenko won Olympic gold twice and world titles at three weights, and Vasyl Slipak, a baritone at the Paris Opera, was killed in the Donbas in 2016.
