Oleksandr
Oleksandr is the Ukrainian Alexander: same Greek name, different language, and a set of short forms English has never had. Sashko, Sasha and Oles all come out of it, and Aleksandr is the Russian form, not the source of this one.

History & meaning
Alexandros is older than Alexander the Great: the Iliad already uses it as a second name for Paris of Troy, and Mycenaean tablets have a form of it. The Macedonian king then made it the most borrowed name in the ancient world, and Christian saints and Byzantine emperors kept it in circulation until it reached Rus with the liturgy. Ukrainian added a prop vowel at the front, giving Oleksandr, where Russian says Aleksandr. Say the Ukrainian form and you are using the Ukrainian name, not a regional variant of the Russian one.
The short forms are the interesting part. Sashko and Sasha come from the Slavic diminutive machinery, clipping the middle of the name and adding a suffix, and Sasha now works in a dozen languages. Oles and Lesyk take a different route, cutting from the front of Oleksandr, and Oles is a real name in its own right rather than a pet form: the novelist Oles Honchar was registered as Oleksandr. Ukrainian also keeps a vocative case, so a man called Oleksandr is addressed as Oleksandre, which is one of the small signals that a Ukrainian name is being used in Ukrainian.

Alexander is the English form and needs no introduction anywhere. Andriy is the other Ukrainian name that travels without adjustment. Maksym is shorter and more current among Ukrainian children.
