History & meaning
Maximus began as a Roman cognomen for the biggest or the eldest, and the empire handed it out generously: generals, emperors and, in time, martyrs. The one who fixed it in the eastern calendar was Maximus the Confessor, the seventh-century theologian who lost his tongue and his right hand for refusing an imperial compromise on doctrine. From there the name went into Church Slavonic and out into Ukrainian without its Latin ending, as Maksym. Russian keeps Maksim with an i; the vowel is the language, not a variant spelling.
Two bearers give the name its Ukrainian weight. Maksym Zalizniak, a Zaporozhian Cossack, led the Koliivshchyna rising of 1768 in Right-Bank Ukraine and became the central figure of Shevchenko's long poem Haidamaky. Maksym Rylskyi, born in 1895, was one of the Kyiv Neoclassicists, translated Pushkin, Mickiewicz and French verse into Ukrainian, and was arrested in 1931 and released a year later, outliving most of the writers of his generation. Since the 1990s the name has been ordinary again, and the short form Maks slips into English with nothing lost.

It means the greatest, which no one can argue with, and it comes with a ready-made international nickname. In a repertoire where many names need explaining at an English-speaking school gate, Maksym needs only one letter of explanation.

Famous Maksyms
Maksym Zalizniak led the haidamaka rising of 1768 and passed into folk song and into Shevchenko's Haidamaky. Maksym Rylskyi is one of the major Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century, and Kyiv's institute of art studies and folklore carries his name. Maksym Berezovsky, born in Hlukhiv in 1745, studied in Bologna and wrote some of the earliest Ukrainian sacred concertos.
